Support system for students eligible for the 2024 Interdisciplinary Next-Generation Researcher Development Program

1.Purpose

 Tokushima University has established an interdisciplinary program to develop the next generation of researchers, aiming to nurture doctoral candidates who can play an active role in various fields as innovators who will bring about change in society.
 Students participating in this program will not only be provided with living expenses and research funds, but will also be given the opportunity to participate in student support projects (providing a research environment and career development/nurturing content) in the hope that they will go on to play active roles in various areas of society in the future.
 We will provide the following financial support to eligible students (Uzushio Scholars) to further stimulate their research activities and improve their research capabilities.

 This year, there will be more opportunities to travel abroad, and we believe that the scope of your research activities will expand.
 This program provides support for study abroad and internships, so please actively participate and make use of it for your research activities!

2.Support system for Uzushio Scholars

1)Overseas study support project *Deadline: January 31, 2025 (Friday)

 In order to promote overseas study and develop human resources who can play an active role in the global society, we will provide travel expenses etc. for those studying at overseas universities etc. according to the region of travel.

①Eligible applicants
 - Students supported by this program who have submitted a study abroad application or overseas travel notification as stipulated in the school regulations
 - Those who have received tentative acceptance from the host university

②Amount of support
 ・Travel expenses (round-trip transportation costs (including economy airfare), accommodation, and daily allowance) will be paid at a fixed rate based on the "Tokushima University Travel Expenses Regulations" (this may be reduced).
 ・Airfare will have an upper limit as shown below, and if it falls below this amount, the actual cost will be the support amount.
  A)China and Korea         150,000 yen
  B)Asia other than China and Korea 200,000 yen
  C)Other regions          400,000 yen

③Application requirements
 - Studying abroad must commence by March 2025.
 - Studying abroad must last for at least 8 days but not more than a year.。
 - If you are receiving other scholarships (excluding loan-type scholarships) related to studying abroad from our university or other institutions (Japanese government, foreign government, private organizations, etc.), please consult in advance.
 - The purpose and plan of your study abroad must be clear, and you are expected to benefit from studying abroad.
 - You must be sure to obtain the necessary visa to study in the country where the host university is located.
 - In principle, you must enroll in overseas travel insurance designated by our university.
  *Applications can be made even before permission to study abroad is granted. However, if permission is denied, support will be cancelled.
  *Even if you are already studying abroad, you can apply if you study abroad after being selected as a student supported by this program.。
   However, no payments must have been made using university funds (including external funds such as research grants and commissioned research funds).
  *In principle, changes to the schedule or additions to the purpose of your study abroad will not be permitted after support has been approved, but if there are unavoidable circumstances, you will be asked to submit a statement of reasons.

  *Please make an effort to be economical with regard to airfare, such as purchasing the cheapest air ticket possible.

⑤Payment method
 The payment will be transferred to an account in the student's name.。

2)Support for research presentations at international conferences *Deadline: January 31, 2025 (Friday)

 In order to stimulate research activities, travel expenses will be paid for research presentations at international conferences (academic conferences and research meetings) overseas, depending on the region of travel.

①Eligible applicants
 - Students supported by this program who have received consent to present at academic conferences (posters, oral presentations, invited lectures, etc.)
 - Students supported by this program who are the first or corresponding author of a paper to be presented

②Amount of support
 ・Travel expenses (round-trip transportation costs (including economy airfare), accommodation, and daily allowance) will be paid at a fixed rate based on the "Tokushima University Travel Expenses Regulations" (this may be reduced).。
 ・Airfare will have an upper limit as shown below, and if it falls below this amount, the actual cost will be the support amount.。
  A)China and Korea         150,000 yen
  B)Asia other than China and Korea 200,000 yen
  C)Other regions          400,000 yen

③Application requirements
 - The presentation poster/slides must include a statement of acknowledgments.。
 - You must be able to return to university by March 31, 2025.。
 - There must be no payments made from university funds (including external funds such as grants-in-aid for scientific research or contracted research, and the student's research funds). If the support has already been paid from the student's research funds, the support amount will be allocated in addition to the research funds.
 - In principle, you must have overseas travel insurance.
  *Applications can be made even if the presentation is made before application or before the decision to accept the presentation is made. However, if the presentation is not accepted, support will be cancelled. In addition, even if the date of the conference has not been confirmed, you can apply for the scheduled date of the conference.
  *Even if you have already made a presentation at a conference, you can apply if the presentation is made after you have been accepted as a student supported by this program.。
  *In principle, changes to the date or addition of new matters after support has been approved will not be permitted, but if there are unavoidable circumstances, you will be asked to submit a statement of reasons.

  * For airfare, please make an effort to take economical measures such as purchasing the cheapest air ticket possible.

⑤Payment method
 The funds will be allocated in addition to the student's research expenses.
 If the student has already paid for the expenses themselves, the amount will be transferred to an account in the student's name. (Please attach a separate document such as a receipt showing the expenditure details.)

3)Internship Support Project *Final deadline: January 31, 2025 (Friday)

 We will provide accommodation expenses etc. for internships that allow doctoral students to experience what skills and abilities companies and society expect from them, as well as gain hands-on experience in the corporate field, business acumen, speed, etc., and broaden their future possibilities.。

①Eligible applicants
 Students supported by this program who have received tentative acceptance from internship companies, etc.

②Amount of Support
 ・Travel expenses (round-trip transportation costs (including economy airfare), accommodation fees, and daily allowances) will be paid at a fixed amount based on the "Tokushima University Travel Expenses Regulations."
  * Airfare will be paid at the actual fare paid, but accommodation fees and daily allowances may be paid at reduced amounts.

③Application requirements
 - Be sure to enroll in accident insurance and liability insurance (please check that you have enrolled in "Student Education and Research Accident Insurance (Gakkensai)" and "Gakkensai Supplementary Liability Insurance Course B (Intern Compensation)" at the time of enrollment).
  *If you have enrolled in insurance through the Co-op, please contact the Co-op.
  *Even if you have already been dispatched to an internship, you can apply if the dispatch is after you have been selected as a student supported by this program.

⑤Payment method
 The payment will be transferred to an account in the student's name.

4)Paper Submission Support Project *Final deadline: January 31, 2025 (Friday)

 In order to improve research capabilities, we will provide a portion of the paper submission fee and English proofreading fee to encourage the submission of papers to peer-reviewed academic journals (including English journals, excluding non-peer-reviewed journals).

①Eligible applicants
 First author (including co-first author) or corresponding author of submitted paper among students supported by this program

②Amount of support
 - Academic paper submission fees: up to 300,000 yen per paper
 - English proofreading fees: up to 100,000 yen per paper
  *If the amount falls below the respective limits, the actual cost will be used as the support amount.
  *If additional costs related to open access are incurred and exceed the upper limit of the academic paper submission support amount, the actual cost will be taken into account in the support amount.
  *Support for English proofreading fees will be limited to one time per paper.

③Application requirements
 - The paper must be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal and proofread for the purpose of submission to a peer-reviewed journal.
 - The paper must be submitted and proofread after the student is accepted as a supported student, and delivery (receives an invoice for paper submission) must be completed between April 1, 2024 and the end of January, 2025.
 - The author's final manuscript must have been submitted for registration in the Tokushima University Institutional Repository.
  *For English proofreading, the paper must be registered after the decision to publish has been made and reported to the Student Support Division of the Academic Affairs Department by email.

⑤Payment method
 The amount will be added to the student's research budget.
 If the student has already paid for the expenses themselves, the amount will be transferred to an account in the student's name. (Please attach a separate document such as a receipt showing the expenditure details.)

5)Literature ordering support project *Deadline: January 31, 2025 (Friday)

 In order to improve the research environment, we will reimburse a portion of the cost of ordering literature from outside the university at Tokushima University Library.

①Eligible applicants
 Students supported by this program who have requested literature from outside the university at the Tokushima University Library (limited to use for research purposes)

②Amount of support
 - Maximum of 50,000 yen per person per year (no limit on number of cases)
  *If the amount is less than the maximum amount, the support amount will be the actual cost.

③Application requirements
 - The document request from outside the university (request to borrow materials or copy documents) is made at Tokushima University Library and must be for research purposes.

  *Return fees for books borrowed from outside the university and requests from other campuses on campus are not covered.
  *If a student uses public funds to request documents with permission from a faculty member, the name and extension number of the supervising faculty member must be written at the time of the request.
 - The document request must be made after the date of acceptance as a support student and must be completed between April 1st and the end of December 2024.。

3.Common matters for each business

2)How to apply

 Eligible students should download the application form from this page, consult with their mentor (supervising teacher), and submit all required documents by email to the Student Support Division, Academic Affairs Department.

4)Selection and Results

 The Uzushio Program Director will select the applicants based on the documents submitted and decide whether or not to provide support.
 The results will be sent to the applicants and their mentors (supervising professors).

5)Submit a report

 Within two weeks of completing the support under 2. (or within two weeks of receiving support if it has already been completed), submit a report (approximately 1-2 A4 pages) including the following information by email to the Student Support Division, Academic Affairs Department after having your mentor (supervising teacher) confirm it.
  - Name of the support project
  - Motivation for requesting support
  - Contents of the support project (contents of study/research)
  - What you learned from carrying out the support project, changes in your way of thinking, etc.
  - What you were unable to achieve during the support project, the reasons for this, and points of regret

4.Other

(1)Personal information submitted at the time of application will not be used for any purpose other than the selection process.
(2)For "1) Study Abroad Support Program," be sure to consult with your affiliated Academic Affairs Section (Teaching Affairs Section) before studying abroad regarding issues such as the study abroad period and taking courses at this university.
(3)For "1) Study Abroad Support Program" and "2) International Conference Research Presentation Support Program,"
   if traveling to support work for this university, please consult withthe Student Support Division, Academic Affairs Department in advance.
(4)If you are forced to cancel your support program, please contactthe Student Support Division, Academic Affairs Department immediately.
(5)Use research funds appropriately in accordance with the accounting regulations of this university under the management and guidance of your mentor (supervising professor).
